Your <a href=\"\/products-services-cc\/home-heating\/furnaces\/\">furnace<\/a> is working hard to keep your family warm and comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>The last thing you want is for your <a href=\"\/products-services-cc\/home-heating\/furnaces\/\">home heating system<\/a> to break down on the coldest day of the year.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, here are some telltale signs your furnace needs a tune-up.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. There\u2019s intermittent (or no) heat<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The most obvious sign, if your furnace struggles to generate and circulate heat on a regular basis, <a href=\"\/blog\/pros-no-cons-really-scheduling-regular-furnace-maintenance\/\">it\u2019s time for a maintenance visit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>No matter how low the temperature drops outside, that shouldn\u2019t impact the reliability and performance of your furnace.<\/p>\n<p>Common reasons this could happen include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Thermostat is at ON setting: <\/strong>When the fan is ON, the blower will always run (even if the furnace isn\u2019t producing heat). Switch the setting to AUTO to have your furnace blow warm air only.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pilot light is out: <\/strong>Relight the pilot light (or <a href=\"\/contact-hours\/\">have us do it<\/a>). If it stays lit, you\u2019re all set. If it doesn\u2019t light at all, make sure gas is actually flowing into the furnace from its supply line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2883 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.comfortplusheatandcool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Dry-air-solutions-replace-dirty-air-filter-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dirty air filter\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As well, it is possible for your furnace to \u201coverheat\u201d (that\u2019s when it blows warm air, then cold air, then nothing at all).<\/p>\n<p>When that happens, a limit safety switch kicks in to cool the furnace down to a safe operating level.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, this is caused by a <strong>dirty air filter<em>. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Change the filter ASAP and check if the furnace begins to blow warm air.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Strange, unpleasant noises<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Your furnace should operate silently and not sound like a jet engine.<\/p>\n<p>If it does, it usually indicates one (or a combination of) the following things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>BANGING NOISE &#8211; Blower motor issue: <\/strong>Without a functioning blower motor, the warm air inside your furnace stays there and doesn\u2019t go in your <a href=\"\/products-services-cc\/indoor-air-quality\/duct-cleaning\/\">ducts<\/a> and throughout your home.<\/li>\n<li><strong>POPPING NOISE &#8211; Dirty burners: <\/strong>Debris that\u2019s trapped in the burners will prevent them from lighting properly. That popping noise is actually gas build-up igniting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>POPPING NOISE \u2013 Air duct problem:<\/strong> Heat causes metal to expand and lack of heat makes them contract. As a result, you may hear a popping or banging sound from time-to-time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whenever you hear anything out of the ordinary coming from your furnace, don\u2019t \u201cwait it out\u201d or \u201chope it goes away.\u201d Instead, <a href=\"\/contact-hours\/\">contact us and explain what you\u2019re hearing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"\/products-services-cc\/indoor-air-quality\/alarms\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2893\" src=\"http:\/\/www.comfortplusheatandcool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Carbon-Monoxide-Alarm-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Carbon Monoxide Alarm\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><strong>3. Carbon monoxide alarm goes off<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Carbon monoxide (CO) is odourless, colourless, and very deadly.<\/p>\n<p>If your <a href=\"\/products-services-cc\/indoor-air-quality\/alarms\/\">carbon monoxide alarm<\/a> goes off, it\u2019s a sign that your furnace <strong>isn\u2019t burning fuel completely. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whether that\u2019s from dirty <a href=\"\/products-services-cc\/indoor-air-quality\/air-filtration\/\">air filtration<\/a> inside your unit or a symptom of a mechanical issue, <a href=\"\/contact-hours\/\">contact us immediately<\/a> if your CO alarm sounds.<\/p>\n<p>Other things you should do include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turn off all gas appliances: <\/strong> Stove\/oven. Heaters. <a href=\"\/products-services-cc\/home-heating\/gas-fireplaces\/\">Gas fireplace<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Open all windows: <\/strong>To allow the CO to dissipate and exit your home.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contact the fire department: <\/strong>Anyone experiencing symptoms of CO poisoning (dizziness, vomiting, headaches) needs to be moved to fresh air and tended to immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>4. Thermostat isn\u2019t working properly<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Think of your thermostat as the nerve centre for your <a href=\"\/care-maintenance-protection-plans-cc\/furnaces\/\">furnace<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s where decisions are made (to raise or lower the temperature) and where you can see the results (temperature, fan settings, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>If you turn your thermostat up a few degrees, but nothing happens, here\u2019s what it could mean:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Faulty power source: <\/strong>The batteries could be dead. Its fuse may have switched off. Some wires might have gotten disconnected.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s dirty: <\/strong>Remove any dust, debris (and even spider webs) from your thermostat. Use a brand new, soft brush. Or use compressed air to blow it clean. Just don\u2019t get it wet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Should it not respond to commands after you\u2019ve done the above, it may be time to <strong>replace your thermostat; <\/strong>especially if it\u2019s old.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re not meant to last forever and are probably costing you extra money because it\u2019s just not working as it should.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5.
